Puzzle 12
“We – A, B and C – each have some children.
(i) A has at least one girl and twice as many boys as girls.

(ii) B has at least one girl and three times as many boys as girls.

(iii) C has at least one girl and three more boys than girls.

(iv) When I tell you the number of children we have – a number less than 25 – you will know how many children I have, but not how many children each of the others has. Altogether we have……..”

Who is the speaker and how many children does the speaker have?

We don't know who the speaker is because they haven't told us how many children they have.

I think I got this worked out.

I reckon the speaker is B, and B has 4 children. The total number of children is 14: A and C have 6 and 4 each or 3 and 7 each, but you can't tell which.

Am I right? If so, I wasted a load of time on that. If not, I've completely wasted a load of time on that!

I think mine is right because notice in the last paragraph it says "When I tell you...."

Notice the keyword 'WHEN'. The person doesn't actually tell us.
